The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) provides the communication mechanisms necessary to convey management information in a consistent manner enabling inter-operation of management applications and SNMP Agents across a wide variety of IT resources.

Information exhanged via the SNMP is defined as objects and notifications in Management Information Base (MIB) modules using the Structure of Management Information (SMI).

The NETCONF protocol is used to manipulate configuration and state data contained within network devices and services.

Configuration and state information manipulated by the NETCONF protocol is defined within schema modules specified using the YANG data modeling language.
